Society of Holistic Learners

The Pakaraka School Board has developed a new legal entity to carry the Charter School application and contract. Its purpose is to create an enduring commitment for the community that can be expressed through the charter school model. The School Board feel this best reflects our communities hopes for the school.

The new legal entity includes a commitment to an alternative education philosophy and to our unique community in a way that speaks to our collective strengths and hopes:

  • The Steiner education philosophy allows our teachers and staff to fulfill collective aspirations for a holistic education practice (unlike any locally although still in line with the New Zealand curriculum).
  • The Bicultural commitment is to remain true to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, regardless of what legislative changes come in future, and create a meaningful direction for staff to grow in offering more of a Te Ao Māori education experience.

The name identified was the Society of Holistic Learners (SOHL) trust. The full trust deed for the new entity can be found via the trusts registry: Charitable Trusts Registry – Society of Holistic Learners

There are several key aspects that have gone into the entity’s design:

  • 1. An empowered school community, like a state school
  • 2. An engaged school community as Whanau Ropu for the school (Section 18)
  • 3. Empowered Teachers (Section 10.5)
  • 4. Not-for-Profit – and all for purposeful education (Section 9)

The Current School Board will act as the founding trustee, but will immediately open to the full membership for new trustee to join once Charter School contract is agreed.
